Ben Jewell has reached a turning point in his life. His ten-year-old son Jonah has a severe form of autism, and he and his wife Emma, a lawyer by profession, are at the end of their strength. At Emma's urging, Ben agrees to pretend to divorce, in order to increase Jonah's chances of receiving the best care in a special institution for autistic children. Ben and Jonah go to live with George, Ben's elderly father who adores his grandson but has unresolved issues with his own son. While Ben struggles with Jonah and his demanding routines that sometimes drive him to the brink of madness, Emma is increasingly absent both in spirit and body... Ben realizes that he is alone in the fight for his son and that all the burden of responsibility falls on his shoulders. Meanwhile, he also battles his alcohol addiction, which has been his only comfort for years...
